書後索引的編製是一種檢索系統的設計開發工作，也是一種主題分析的過程。研究者希望能以工作領域分析的角度，了解索引編製工作的程序，建立一書籍索引工作程序的理解模型，藉此能夠更深入的探討書籍索引工作的本質。

研究者透過三個書後索引個案，以及十二位索引工作者的訪談，提出以下發現：
  - 手段-目的：對目的的認知、對讀者的想像
  - 活動分析：
  - 決策分析：編輯決策、語義決策

研究者進一步比較相關書後索引研究
